Nancy Pearl Shows Us Love!

Nancy at ALA Midwinter 2011 Like most of you, we consider ourselves to be Nancy Pearl devotees.  And though we go to bat for all of our titles, there's an extra-special thrill when Nancy loves something we publish.  This was just the case at the ALA Midwinter conference in San Diego, when Nancy tweeted about Caribou Island, one of our hottest titles: "Reading David Vann's gorgeously crafted Caribou Island broke my heart. Wow." Moments after Nancy's tweet went out, librarians filed into our booth and–happily–discovered a pile of hardcovers that we handed to the masses.

Another librarian-favorite also found favor with Nancy: Jacqueline Winspear's The Mapping of Love and Death.  She wrote: "Forgot to tweet how much I ♥ Jacqueline Winspear's Mapping of Love and Death; can't wait to read the new one [A Lesson in Secrets] this April. You go, Maisie!"

If you'd like to join in the lovefest, check out the catalog pages for Caribou Island and A Lesson in Secrets, and be sure to follow Nancy on Twitter, @Nancy_Pearl.

Conor Grennan, Inspiration, Little Princes

Little Princes

Marilyn and Conor

In search of adventure, twenty-nine-year-old Conor Grennan traded his day job for a year-long trip around the globe, a journey that began with a three-month stint volunteering at the Little Princes Children’s Home, an orphanage in war-torn Nepal.  Hopefully you got the chance to meet Conor Grennan at ALA Midwinter, where he signed copies of Little Princes: One Man's Promise to Bring Home the Lost Children of Nepal, and discussed the series of events that lead him to found Next Generation Nepal.  For that story, in his own words, check out his column on the Huffington Post

Reuters also ran a fantastic piece on Conor's work, with the best headline I've seen in a while: U.S. author's pickup line becomes crusade in Nepal. Still curious? Got a question for Conor? Log on to CNN and ask away.  And no, unfortunately, he's not still single…

365 Thank Yous

Kralik We at HarperLibrary are very excited about the buzz surrounding an extremely fascinating book entitled, 365 Thank Yous by John Kralik.  Kralik's book, published by Hyperion (on sale now), is an amazing story of how John turned his life around simply by learning the importance of two simple words…Thank you.

John Kralik tells how his life was on a downward spiral, and by simply writing thank you notes to those he interacted with changed his perspective and his life overall.  John was recently featured on the CBS Evening News.  If you missed the interview, you can watch it here!

If you haven't picked up 365 Thank Yous, what are you waiting for?  I know you'll be glad you did…and you can say "thank you" later (hahaha!).

Enjoy!

Collection Development, Current Affairs, Gayle Tzemach Lemmon, The Dressmaker of Khair Khana

The Dressmaker of Khair Khana

We've been lucky to have Gayle Lemmon appear at both ALA Annual (2009) and ALA Midwinter this past month.  And with this new pre-pub blurb from Angelina Jolie, it looks like Gayle's librarian fans will have some company! Jolie wrote the following: The Dressmaker of Khair Khana gives voice to many of our world’s unsung heroines. Against all odds, these young women created hope and community, and they never gave up. This book is guaranteed to move you—and to show you a side of Afghanistan few ever see.” Check out this message from Gayle, and see for yourself!
