Who Loves Wiley Cash? NYTBR Loves Wiley Cash!

9780062088239_0_CoverIn case it is not clear to you, the post title is meant to be sung to the tune of "Who Wears Short Shorts?" Glad we're on the same page.

Anyway…do you know how I know that the New York Times Book Review loves Wiley Cash?? They named A Land More Kind Than Home one of the Top 100 Notable Books of 2012! BOOM!  Congratulations, Wiley!

His second novel is coming out next year, and it's the equally captivating tale of a father trying to rescue his two young daughters.  The narrative is again told in three voices, a technique that Wiley has proven he excels at.

Some other great titles that graced this list include Beautiful Ruins, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, Flight Behavior, The Round House and Victory, so Wiley is in pretty amazing company.

Gift List ideas! #justsayin'

Happy Thanksgiving!

Tomorrow I will be giving thanks for this wonderful job because it gives me the chance to interact with you lovely readers and how lucky is that??

We wish you lots of joy and happiness as you celebrate this day of thanks with your loved ones, and thought it would be cool to share this clip of Kenneth C. Davis doing what he does best, educating!  Check out his appearance on the CBS Morning Show where he discusses the actual origins and history behind this day.

And don't forget what a wise man (I'm pretty sure it was Ben Franklin) once said, "On this day of Thanksgiving, treasure your relationships, your health and be sure to wear stretchy pants."

PS: Ok, you got me…I said that.

Love is in the Air!

You guys, Valentine's Day is not even close, but I'm bursting with lurve because Library Journal has named their top romances of 2012 and quite a few look familiar!

9780062106186_0_Cover Phillips’s Call Me Irresistible leaves off, addressing serious issues with over-the-top humor, spot-on dialog, and touching tenderness.

SCANDAL WEARS SATIN
by Loretta Chase

A clever, unstoppable beauty engineers a deliciously wicked deception in order to avert scandal, keep the family’s secrets, and save her and her sisters’ dressmaking business—as well as exact a bit of revenge—in a neatly plotted, witty Regency romp that brims with memorable characters and is as funny as it is heartwarming.

Congratulations, Louise Erdrich!

9780062065247Last night was an exciting evening in the book world. The National Book Award winners were announced and I'm guessing you have an idea who might have won. Louise Erdrich took home the prestigious award for fiction for The Round House! This is the second in a trilogy, following The Plague of Doves (a Pulitzer Prize finalist, nbd), and I highly recommend reading it. I presented this title at ALA in June, and although I had not read the first book, I really enjoyed this one and didn't feel like I was missing out on anything.  Then I went back and read The Plague of Doves, and now can't wait to complete the set. You can hear me chatting about the book over on Earlyword.

Also nominated was Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, a particular in-house fave. Kayleigh loves this book and anything she recommends I immediately add to my TBR pile, so follow suit and get on it!

Honestly, Lincoln Looks Abe-azing

OMG THAT'S THE WORST OF ALL THE PUNS I'VE EVER WRITTEN! In my defense, I have a cold and everything I say sounds like this.

So, to the point of my post…LINCOLN.  How good does this movie look?? SO GOOD! I've been obsessively reading everything I can find on it, and I am so excited to see it.  Daniel Day Lewis is magic.  Did you know Spielberg tried to make everything as authentic as possible, down to using Lincoln's actual pocket watch for the sound effects? I'll stop geeking out now.

We happen to have an excellent backlist of Lincoln related material which I recommend as companion reading:

9780060518509Manhunt
by James Swanson describes
the hour-by-hour details of the twelve days after Abraham Lincoln’s
assassination when various factions within the U.S. government — and
even some outside it — hunted for the President’s killer, John Wilkes
Booth.
9780061233791

Bloody Crimes by James Swanson is the epic
story of the search for Jefferson Davis across the South, and the
eventful funeral procession for the assassinated president.

9780062265098

Lincoln by Harold Holzer (the movie tie-in) is written especially for young readers by a Lincoln and
Civil War expert, author, and consultant to the movie. It traces how
Lincoln came to view slavery and end it.

To make up for the terrible jokes that I subject you to, I'm giving away some books! First 10 lucky people to email librarylovefest@harpercollins.com will get their pick of one of these titles.  Include the title and your mailing address in the email, please.

What I’m Reading: The Golem and the Jinni

9780062110831_0_CoverI chat about lots of things, but I don't often tell you specifically what I'm reading in real time.  So since it's obvi all about me, I've decided to start a feature called "What I'm Reading." Excited?

First up, something I am a huge fan of, The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker. This is a debut novel that I think everyone will find wonderfully engaging.

The story is set in 1900 NYC (I am already sold!). Wecker introduces the Golem, a being made of clay, created to do her master's bidding, but who finds herself un-moored from her purpose when he dies (NOT a spoiler, promise). She finds herself growing to care about the humans in her community, but feels fundamentally alone until she meets the Jinni, a creature of fire (conveniently manifested in hunky man form) who craves his freedom from the wizard who trapped him. Their lives intertwine in unexpected ways as they discover their origins aren't that different. Wecker marries historical fiction and fable, one from Yiddish and the other from Arab mythology, into an incredible story of love, acceptance and bravery. The supporting cast of characters is also very rich, a kind young social worker, a mysterious old man, and a nervous tinsmith contribute to the rich story telling.

Michael Chabon, Erin Morgenstern and Jonathan Safran Foer have all been mentioned as comp authors, so way to go Helene! I think this could be a really great discovery for you and your patrons.  Check, check, check, check it out!

Galley Giveaway

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, our thoughts and hopes for a timely recovery go out to anyone who has been effected. We are going to do what we do best here, and give away a grab-bag full of galleys to three libraries in the tri-state area. Each box will contain 10 galleys of an assortment of non-fiction, fiction, mystery, spiritual, historical, and perhaps a few other things as well.

Public librarians in NY, NJ or CT, please email librarylovefest@harpercollins.com by Tuesday, November 6th (ELECTION DAY!) when three winners will be chosen at random.

Stay safe this weekend.
