365 Thank Yous

Kralik We at HarperLibrary are very excited about the buzz surrounding an extremely fascinating book entitled, 365 Thank Yous by John Kralik.  Kralik's book, published by Hyperion (on sale now), is an amazing story of how John turned his life around simply by learning the importance of two simple words…Thank you.

John Kralik tells how his life was on a downward spiral, and by simply writing thank you notes to those he interacted with changed his perspective and his life overall.  John was recently featured on the CBS Evening News.  If you missed the interview, you can watch it here!

If you haven't picked up 365 Thank Yous, what are you waiting for?  I know you'll be glad you did…and you can say "thank you" later (hahaha!).

Stiltsville – Guest Review

Stiltsville hc c We are so happy about the huge response we received for Stiltsville, by Susanna Daniel.  The love for Stiltsville continues!

We received a great review from Lisa Steckhahn, Reference Librarian from the West Allis Public Library in Wisconsin.  Here is Lisa's review of Stiltsville:

This book is a look at the lifespan of a marriage and a friendship starting at the beginning and checking in at all of the major milestones along the way.  Frances meets Dennis and Marse at the same time.  Marse likes Dennis but he ends up falling for Frances.  Even with this rocky start Marse and Frances become best friends.  This is a testament to the author’s ability to create characters that are likeable but still fully realized with authentic flaws and strengths.  Susanna Daniel manages to avoid clichés and craft a believable story filled with a marriage’s mistakes and triumphs.  The Miami setting is another character in the book that lends an unforgettable setting.  It would be a great book to return to during the coldest days of winter.

The New York Times Reviews Furious Love!

9780061562846 You might remember my preternatural attachment to Richard Burton from earlier posts…in case you don't, here's my first review of Furious Love, the dual-biography of the Burtons by Nancy Schoenberger and Sam Kashner.  The New York Times recently ran a stellar write-up of Furious Love, calling it "an indulgent, plenty-of-fun book about Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s traveling circus of money, booze and mutual obsession." I couldn't agree more.  Reviewer Ada Calhoun writes, "There’s a lesson here for couples: marriage doesn’t have to be a partnership of equals. It can be a bodice-ripping, booze-soaked, jewel-bedecked brawl that survives even death. It’s a tough way to live, but it makes for a good beach book." If that doesn't make you want to stuff Furious Love inside your beach-bag, I don't know what will.  Browse inside the book, and click here for the full review!

32 Candles

32Candles hc c I blogged about a book entitled, 32 Candles, by Ernessa T. Carter.  Ernessa's book, 32 Candles is the story of a self-proclaimed ugly duckling who finds her voice and finds herself.  Check out my article.

We received a great review from Lisa Steckhahn, Reference Librarian for the West Allis Public Library.  Here is what Lisa thought of 32 Candles:

"32 Candles is a look at the life of a very unique girl who moves to Los Angeles after enduring abuse from her mom and high school classmates.  Davie enjoys Molly Ringwald movies and wants her own “Molly Ringwald Ending”, a sentiment shared by many girls of her generation.  When she arrives in LA she transforms herself into another person and becomes a nightclub singer.  After establishing a life there, she encounters her high school crush who makes her relive all of the memories she ran away from.  It was a very entertaining read and I couldn’t help but root for Davie even though she is flawed.  The flaws are what makes her interesting and cause the reader to hope that she finally finds her “Molly Ringwald Ending”.

Monday Madness…32 Candles

32Candles hc c So if you are anything like me, you are probably sitting in front of your computer reading this and wondering to yourself "where on EARTH did the weekend go?"

I know one great way to get over the "Monday Blues"…talk about and give away good books!

I am very excited about an upcoming book entitled, 32 Candles, by Ernessa T. Carter.  32 Candles, on sale in June tells the story of Davie Jones, a self-proclaimed ugly duckling from Mississippi, who feels her life couldn't be any worse than it already is.  She's teased at school, and doesn't have the greatest relationship with her mother.  On top of all this, she's in love with a handsome football player, who doesn't know she's alive.  After watching the movie Sixteen Candles, she believes that in spite of it all, if Molly Ringwald can have a happy ending, so can she!

After she realizes she can't take the drama anymore, Davie decides to try her luck at fame and fortune in the big city of Los Angeles, where she reinvents herself and becomes a successful nightclub singer.  As if life couldn't get any better, the handsome football player walks into the club one night.  He doesn't recognize her and her dreams of love become reality. By all accounts, everything is just perfect, until something from Davie's past threatens to haunt her and tarnish her bright future.

I presented 32 Candles at the ALA Midwinter Conference during our Title Presentation.  To hear my "buzz" on the book, click here!

I am SO excited about this book and would love to hear your comments.  I will send free copies of 32 Candles to the 11 lucky people who send us a comment or an email at librarylovefest at harpercollins dot com.  If you would be so kind as to send a brief review of the book, I would greatly appreciate it!

Secret Daughter

SecretDaughterINTL c We are so excited about this amazing new book.  First time novelist Shilpi Somaya Gowda has a true hit on her hands with Secret Daughter, an emotional story that explores motherhood, loss, acceptance and belonging.  The reviews are outstanding!  Here are just a few of them:

"Secret Daughter is an engaging read, with its quick shifts between characters and rapid movement through 20 years of familial narrative…Gowda resolutely refuses to tie up all her loose ends, keeping the novel from settling into banality."
Boston Globe

"Some of the best contemporary novels about families and what it means to be American are bring written by Indian – or Pakistani-Americans, many of them women.  I've read and admired a lot of them lately, and Secret Daughter, Californian Shilpi Somaya Gowda's debut, is my favorite…her novel is captivating and ultimately very wise…This novel travels far in the world, and deep into the human heart."
Minneapolis Star Tribune

I had the pleasure of meeting Shilpi Somaya Gowda as she signed copies of Secret Daughter at the Texas Library Association Conference held in San Antonio earlier this month.  She was warm, engaging, and a true hit among the librarians there!

Secret Daughter should be a part of your reading list.  You WILL NOT regret it!

Wench hc c Last month, I blogged about a book entitled, Wench, by Dolen Perkins-Valdez.  Wench is the story of three female slave mistresses and the friendship they built despite living in a period of oppression.   Check out my article.

We received a great review from Jennifer M. Winberry, Principal Librarian, Extension Services, Acquisitions and Programming for the Hunterdon County Library.  Here it is:

Set in the decade prior to the American Civil War, Wench tells the story of Lizzie and three other slave women who are brought to Tawawa Resort in Ohio each summer by their masters who have taken these women as their mistresses.  Lizzie, from all appearances, and in her own mind, is treated very well, is considered a favored slave on her plantation, and Drayle shows a considerable amount of affection toward her and toward the two children she bore for him.  Over the years, Lizzie, Reenie and Sweet have formed a strong summer friendship and are mostly accepting of their roles in life until the summer a fourth woman, Mawu comes into their midst and says the word aloud that until now the others only dared say to themselves:  freedom. Dangerous and determined to escape, Mawu sets off a chain of events that brings tragedy to each woman, but that also offers a chance for each woman to change the course of her own destiny, whatever may come. The women will slowly work their way into your mind and heart, especially Lizzie who grows so much over the course of the book, as each searches for her own freedom and the strength to live with her decisions.

Push, by Sapphire

Push Here at HarperLibrary we love our books…I mean we REALLY LOVE OUR BOOKS.  Every now and then, you do have to give credit where credit is due.  I’m sure by now everyone has heard the major buzz about the movie “Precious,” which is based on the book Push by Sapphire.  I just had the opportunity to read Push and was BLOWN AWAY!

While reading Push, a multitude of emotions overcame me…anger, sadness, hurt, and hope.  I was angry and sad because of the realization of what this young woman truly had to endure.  Feelings of hurt came because in some way, I wish there was something that could have done to help prevent such a thing from happening in the first place.  Finally, I was hopeful because I realized that by telling Precious’ story, she is helping so many others overcome (and hopefully prevent) similar situations.  Push will help someone make a total turnaround, by turning tragedy into triumph.

If you haven’t read Push, please make it part of your reading list…and go see "Precious"!

Happy Friday!

Wench hc c When I was on vacation recently, I had the opportunity to read a fascinating and eye-opening book.  Wench, by Dolen Perkins-Valdez (on sale in January 2010) is the story of three female slave mistresses and the friendship they built despite living in a period of oppression.  Every summer, slaveholders would take their slave mistresses to a place called “Tawawa House”, a resort in Ohio that had a main building and several cottages where the slave master and slave mistress would co-exist as a couple.  It was very well known, yet a very well kept secret.

Wench focuses on three women, Lizzie, Reenie and Sweet, who each year along with their slave masters would reside in Tawawa House.  These women built a lasting bond and always looked forward to seeing each other.  They were content and enjoyed their time at Tawawa House…they were in short, “happy”…or so they thought.   Along comes a fourth slave mistress named Mawu, who rocks their standard way of living and thinking.  She also plants the idea of something very forbidden…escape to freedom.  When a tragedy strikes the resort, the lives of Lizzie, Reenie and Sweet are never quite the same.

What I appreciated about Wench is the way in which the author really captured the lives and thoughts of these women.  Dolen Perkins-Valdez removes their masks and taps into their very soul.  It made you see that (in their minds) they confused little liberties with being truly happy and free.  While they may have had the ability to read (a skill that slaves were not allowed to have) or didn’t have to do as many chores as the other slaves on the plantation, they were still dehumanized and degraded.  In addition, this book really made you feel like you were there in that period of our country’s history, experiencing the highs and many lows in their lives.  I could not put this book down.

I am SO excited about this book that I would love to hear your comments.  I will send free copies of Wench to the 12 lucky people who send us a comment or an email at librarylovefest at harpercollins dot com.  If you would be so kind as to send a brief review of the book, I would greatly appreciate it!  I hope you find Wench as revealing and heartbreaking as I have.

Manhood for Amateurs

9780061490187 A couple of weeks ago, I was determined to see Michael Chabon during the New York leg of his book tour for Manhood for Amateurs.  (As you can see here and here, I'm a huge fan of The Mysteries of Pittsburgh.)  So it wasn't a big deal for me to hop on the 2/3 and make the hour-long trek into the deep reaches of Brooklyn.  Chabon gave a wonderful talk on non-fiction writing, reading a few essays from Manhood for Amateurs, which manages to be insightful, wonderfully written, and truly poignant.  He took questions from the audience at the tail-end of the event, and even mentioned an idea he has for a book based on the life of Queen's Freddie Mercury.  (Fingers crossed!)

The talk is part of a Brooklyn Public Library series curated by editor Matt Weiland on the Art of Non-Fiction.  The next event, this Thursday night, features Padgett Powell, author of The Interrogative Mood.  For more info on the series, click here.  And while you're at it, be sure to browse inside Manhood for Amateurs.  You can also read one of the essays here courtesy of the New York Review of Books.

Barack and Michelle

BarackandMichelleHC c

I am so excited about this new book that I had to share it with everyone.  Barack and Michelle: Portrait of an American Marriage, by Christopher Andersen is a fascinating book into the lives of "America's First Couple".

Barack and Michelle, (on sale now) gives us an inside look into their marriage and how they are making it a successful one.  Given everything they have to handle, whether it is trying to "save the country", raising a family or facing the reality of public scrutiny, they carry themselves with their heads held high, while never forgetting the love they have for one another.  Barack and Michelle also takes us back to their respective lives before they met and how despite the odds, progressed into very successful individuals.

In today's society where couples are getting divorced faster than we can blink, it is so refreshing to see an example of a marriage that does work.  Barack and Michelle gives those of us that are single hope that a marriage can survive the trials, tribulations and successes of life.  It also serves as a benchmark for married couples to remind them of why they got married and hopefully how they can stay that way.

Kaylie Jones Finds Her Voice

LiesMyMother hc c My grandmother used to say “in order to really know someone, you have to walk in their shoes”.  Sometimes what a person projects on the outside is really not what is going on inside.  To some, novelist Kaylie Jones lived the perfect life with a beautiful mother and a famous father.  However, in Lies My Mother Never Told Me, we learn that everything that glitters is not always gold.

Lies My Mother Never Told Me,on sale August 25, 2009 is a fascinating memoir by Kaylie Jones.  In this book, Kaylie Jones recalls her relationship with her mother, particularly in the aftermath of the death of her father, prize-winning novelist James Jones.

Check out this wonderful video where Kaylie Jones gives you a glimpse of her life and why she wrote this amazing book:

I applaud Kaylie Jones for being so open and honest.  I also commend Kaylie for her bravery in sharing something so personal.  I wonder how many of us could share a personal story in the same manner. I hope Lies My Mother Never Told Me helps readers who are going through any kind of personal struggle find their voice and a sense of inner peace, just as Kaylie Jones has.

Tune-in to Author Claire Cook on the Today Show!

Wildwater Claire Cook, author of The Wildwater Walking Club, (on sale now) will be featured on NBC-TV's "Today" Show.  Claire Cook's segment is scheduled for Monday, August 17th in the 8 o'clock hour.

The Wildwater Walking Club is a hilarious and heartwarming story of three very different women, all living in the same beach suburban town, whose walks take them in new and surprising directions.

On Monday, June 29, NBC-TV’s “Today” show taped a home visit with Claire Cook, while she and correspondent Amy Robach went for a walk on the beach.  “Today” also filmed Claire giving a talk and doing a signing at her local store, Front Street Bookstore in Scituate, MA.

The “Today” Show is filming Claire as part of a story on reinvention – and who is more perfect to discuss this than Claire? – who wrote her first book (at age 45) while sitting in her minivan outside her daughter’s swim practices.  Claire literally reinvented herself as a novelist in mid-life and this theme factors in all of Claire’s novels, which will be mentioned on air. Claire gave her workshop on reinvention at the bookstore that evening, so this segment should fit nicely into their story about how to tap into your creativity if you are out of work in this terrible economy.
