THE READING LIFE by C.S. Lewis

9780062849977“In reading great literature I become a thousand men and yet remain myself.” –C.S. Lewis

More than fifty years after his death, revered intellectual and teacher C.S. Lewis continues to speak to readers, thanks not only to his intellectual insights on Christianity but also his wondrous creative works and deep reflections on the literature that influenced his life. Beloved for his instructive novels including The Screwtape Letters, The Great Divorce, and The Chronicles of Narnia as well as his philosophical books that explored theology and Christian life, Lewis was a life-long writer and book lover.

Cultivated from his many essays, articles, and letters, as well as his classic works, The Reading Life provides guidance and reflections on the love and enjoyment of books. Engaging and enlightening, this well-rounded collection includes Lewis’ reflections on science fiction, why children’s literature is for readers of all ages, and why we should read two old books for every new one.

A window into the thoughts of one of the greatest public intellectuals of our time, this collection reveals not only why Lewis loved the written word, but what it means to learn through literature from one of our wisest and most enduring teachers.

Happy Book Birthday to Joshilyn Jackson’s NEVER HAVE I EVER!

9780062855312The Library Love Fest team wishes Joshilyn Jackson's Never Have I Ever a very happy book birthday! Never Have I Ever is a twisting novel of domestic suspense in which a group of women play a harmless drinking game that escalates into a war of dark pasts.

There has been a lot of brand new buzz coming in for this book. It was named one of USA Today's "5 books not to miss." The Wall Street Journal calls it: "…a tale of moral suspense in addition to a psychological thriller. Its several plot twists are surprising and effective, and there are gripping sequences involving Amy’s work as a deep-sea diver woven logically into the narrative. Many books claim to be the perfect beach read. This one doesn’t, but it certainly fits the bill."

There was a ton of library love for this book. We were lucky enough to have Joshilyn speak at this year's Texas Library Association conference. It was also inducted into the LibraryReads Hall of Fame in June. Check out some of the amazing library reviews it previously received:

“Best-selling Jackson successfully trades her usual quirky Southern lit for darker psychological suspense in this latest highly recommended novel. Her prowess at writing affecting, character-driven fiction is on full display, and readers will devour the twisty, consuming story.”
Library Journal Star_PNG41444 review

“Nail-biting suspense… Jackson builds on her talent for creating imperfect, capable, and multi-layered characters to write smart suspense, driven by the intelligence and determination of the instigator and her prey… Never Have I Ever marks a new high in Jackson’s career.”

For readers of Andy Weir and Noah Hawley comes an astonishing debut by the screenwriter of Jurassic Park: a wild and terrifying adventure about three strangers who must work together to contain a highly contagious, deadly organism.

"To be simultaneously terrifying and hilarious is a masterstroke few writers can pull off, but Koepp manages in this incredible fiction debut that calls to mind a beautiful hybrid of Michael Crichton and Carl Hiaasen. Cold Storage is sheer thrillery goodness, and riotously entertaining."

For fans of: We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter and Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly
The New York Times bestselling author of Beautiful Exiles conjures her best novel yet, a pre-World War II-era story with the emotional resonance of Orphan Train and The Nightingale, centering on the Kindertransports that carried thousands of children out of Nazi-occupied Europe—and one brave woman who helped them escape to safety.

"The Last Train to London is an absolutely fascinating, beautifully rendered story…. Clayton perfectly captures the tension and heartbreak of the times, which feel so relevant today. It is a glowing portrait of women rising up against impossible odds to save children.

William Morrow Has FIVE Nominations for the 2019 Anthony Awards!

Untitled-3

We are excited to share that William Morrow, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, has FIVE titles nominated for the 2019 Anthony Awards!

BEST NOVEL

November Road by Lou Berney (William Morrow): Set against the assassination of JFK, a poignant and evocative crime novel that centers on a desperate cat-and-mouse chase across 1960s America—a story of unexpected connections, daring possibilities, and the hope of second chances from the Edgar Award-winning author of The Long and Faraway Gone.

Sunburn by Laura Lippman (William Morrow): New York Times bestselling author Laura Lippman returns with a superb novel of psychological suspense about a pair of lovers with the best intentions and the worst luck: two people locked in a passionate yet uncompromising game of cat and mouse. But instead of rules, this game has dark secrets, forbidden desires, inevitable betrayals—and cold-blooded murder.

BEST PAPERBACK ORIGINAL NOVEL

If I Die Tonight by Alison Gaylin (William Morrow Paperbacks): Reminiscent of the bestsellers of Laura Lippman and Harlan Coben—with a dose of Big Little Lies or Stranger Things—an absorbing, addictive tale of psychological suspense from the author of the highly acclaimed and Edgar Award-nominated What Remains of Me and the USA Today bestselling and Shamus Award-winning Brenna Spector series, in which a seemingly open-and-shut police case with a clear-cut hero and villain turns out to be anything but simple.

Under a Dark Sky by Lori Rader-Day (William Morrow Paperbacks): From the critically-acclaimed author of The Day I Died comes a terrifying twist on a locked-room mystery that will keep readers guessing until the last page, set in a remote dark sky park.

BEST CRITICAL OR NON-FICTION WORK

Dead Girls: Essays on Surviving an American Obsession by Alice Bolin (William Morrow Paperbacks): In this poignant collection, Alice Bolin examines iconic American works from the essays of Joan Didion and James Baldwin to Twin Peaks, Britney Spears, and Serial, illuminating the widespread obsession with women who are abused, killed, and disenfranchised, and whose bodies (dead and alive) are used as props to bolster men’s stories. Smart and accessible, thoughtful and heartfelt, Bolin investigates the implications of our cultural fixations, and her own role as a consumer and creator.

The Anthony Awards will be voted on by attendees at the 50th annual Bouchercon® World Mystery Convention in Dallas, Texas and presented on Saturday, November 2.

An Interview with Jaclyn Moriarty, Author of GRAVITY IS THE THING

9780062883735On this week's episode of The Library Love Fest Podcast, Sarah Lambert, the Marketing Assistant at Harper, called her author Jaclyn Moriarty to talk about her upcoming U.S. adult debut, Gravity Is the Thing.

Gravity Is the Thing tells the story of single mother and cafe owner Abigail Sorenson. Twenty years ago, her brother Robert went missing one day before her sixteenth birthday, never to be seen again. That same year, she began receiving scattered chapters in the mail of a self-help manual, the Guidebook, whose anonymous author promised to make her life soar to heights beyond her wildest dreams. Now, two decades after receiving those first pages, Abi is invited to an all-expenses paid weekend retreat to learn “the truth” about the Guidebook.

Gravity Is the Thing is a smart, unusual, wickedly funny novel about the search for happiness that will break your heart into a million pieces and put it back together, bigger and better than before.

A book Marian Keyes calls “one of the most magical, different, interesting, likable, lovable, beautiful, sad, lovely, immensely uplifting books I have ever read. I read it in an agony of loving it but also being so humbled by the fact that if I lived to be 7,022 years old I would never be able to write a book as good as this. You will adore it—it’s an instant classic.”
