I’LL TAKE YOU THERE definitely takes you there!

Happy Birthday to Wally Lamb's latest, I'll Take You There, which hits shelves today.

Y648 (1)Did you ever wish you could step back in time and observe your younger years as it played out in real time?

That's what Felix Funicello, the narrator of Mr. Lamb's latest heart-tugger does as he examines his relationship with the key women in his life. Through this time travel he gains a greater understanding of these women and what was happening in their lives. Felix was first introduced to us in Wally Lamb's novella, Wishin' and Hopin'. It was set in 1962 and young Felix is navigating his way through 5th grade Catholic School. It's hilarious and heartwarming. Very much like that great TV show The Wonder Years. In I'll Take You There, Felix has grown up—in more ways than one.

I'll Take You There was most deservedly a LibraryReads pick for the month of November.

Pick up a copy (or request one by emailing us at librarylovefest@harpercollins.com) and let us know what you think.

Happy Book Birthday, I'll Take You There.
Congratulations, Mr. Wally Lamb, my literary husband.

THE HEARTS OF MEN has my heart!

9780062469687_ecca3I loved this book from page one.  It’s 1962 and the reader is introduced to a wonderful character, 13 year old Nelson who is the bugler in a Boy Scout’s Camp in Wisconsin. He is ostracized, bullied and yet he remains the loyal and idealistic bugler who does everything by the book. Nelson’s doting mother and harsh father flush out the picture further.  Enter Jonathan, a slightly older kid who weakly defends him (at times) but ultimately betrays Nelson. Despite this Nelson keeps him in his life and through the years we see what lies in the hearts of these men.

Kirkus Reviews starred review: “Across three generations and as many wars, this earnest novel explores the ways boys become men and how even flawed men may stand as models for the young…. Butler's debut novel, Shotgun Lovesongs (2014), explored the forces that bind and erode friendship among a group of young men growing up in a Wisconsin town. This book mines a darker seam, delving into the roots of the male character and how it may be shaped by a code of behavior or an exemplar and warped or strengthened by trauma. He presents few strong women characters, but the exceptions suggest he has much to offer in that area. Butler's mostly unembellished prose delivers a well-paced, affecting read.”

Publishers Weekly starred review: “Butler demonstrates enormous command over the material and sympathy for his flawed characters. This beautiful novel might be his best yet.”

Nickolas Butler is a beautiful writer.  I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. Click here to request the egalley from Edelweiss.

Click below to watch our highlight reel of some of the great titles we raved about in 2016 and get a taste for the shenanigans you can expect for 2017.

Under the Radar, Over the Moon has received stellar praise from librarians all over the country!

"Being made aware of titles that may not be as highly publicized is a huge help. Collection development librarians should order extra copies so readers' advisory librarians have them on hand for patrons." —Robin Beerbower, EarlyWord.com Columnist

“At Douglas County Libraries we LOVE watching Under the Radar, Over the Moon to get the scoop on what’s new, and we LOVE to laugh with the UROM presenters! Can’t wait for the next one.” —Lisa Casper, Branch Program Liaison, Douglas County Libraries

“I make sure I have the titles in carts for consideration and often download the DRC from Edelweiss if it's available. Your recommendations so far have been outstanding. The Nest, Be Frank With Me, Girls on Fire come to mind as titles you helped highlight for me. It is extremely useful to have a spotlight put on books by debut (or in Wasserman's case debut adult) authors. If you did not produce Under the Radar, Over the Moon I would miss it and more importantly, our readers would not be as well served by me.” —Janet Lockhart, Collection Development Librarian, Wake County Public Libraries

Guest Blogger: Bret Baier, Author of THREE DAYS IN JANUARY: DWIGHT EISENHOWER’S FINAL MISSION

166391Bret Baier, Fox News Channel's chief political anchor and host of the #1 rated Special Report with Bret Baier, has a riveting new book coming next year, Three Days in January: Dwight Eisenhower's Final Mission, that inspects the final three days of Dwight D. Eisenhower's presidency. We're extremely excited to share a guest post Bret has written specially for you. Enjoy!

***

I am pleased to tell you about my new book, Three Days in January: Dwight Eisenhower’s Final Mission—a dramatic historical narrative of the critical days between Eisenhower’s farewell address on January 17, 1961 and John F. Kennedy’s inaugural address on January 20, 1961. In the process I describe the reasons Eisenhower meant so much to the nation—and why he is still relevant today.

During the years I worked on this book, I had the privilege of spending time with the librarians and archivists at the Eisenhower Presidential Library in Abilene, Kansas. Their knowledge and dedication are an inspiration to me. But then, librarians have been making an impression on me since I was a child growing up in Georgia.

Eisenhower would have agreed with this sentiment. From his early years he was a voracious reader, a fact he often spoke about. Although the Abilene Public Library wasn’t officially opened until he was eighteen (in 1908), there was a makeshift library in town for much of his youth—thanks to the ladies of Abilene, who raised money and set up a small library in a rented room. As president, Eisenhower expressed his appreciation for the vital work of public libraries by signing the first bill to provide support for them in 1956.

He believed in your contribution, as do I. So it is a great honor for me to have Three Days in January available in libraries across the country.

Starred Reviews for Kathleen Collins’ WHATEVER HAPPENED TO INTERRACIAL LOVE?

9780062484154_96816

Kathleen Collins, the first African American woman to produce a feature-length film, tragically passed away in 1988 at the age of 46. Now, with the help of her daughter, we are releasing a never-before-published collection of Collins' short stories, Whatever Happened to Interracial Love? Stirring and electric, examining deeply human topics with a clear eye and a beautiful voice, this is truly a special release. One story in, it becomes apparent Collins is a vital voice in American literature. See below for a sampling of the early praise:

"Gorgeous and strikingly intimate...Collins has a spectacular sense of dialogue….Though most of the pieces span only a few pages, they are frequently overwhelmingly rich—not just in their sharp takes on sex, race, and relationships, but in the power and music of their sentences. Collins' prose is so precise and hypnotic that no amount of rereading it feels like enough. Astonishing and essential. A gem." —Kirkus starred review

"Race, gender, love, and sexuality are portrayed beautifully and humanely….Full of candor, humor, and poise, this collection, so long undiscovered, will finally find the readers it deserves." Publishers Weekly starred review

Whatever Happened to Interracial Love? goes on sale December 6th. Vibrant, important, and timely, we expect big things for this collection. In anticipation of its on-sale date, we will send a finished copy upon its release to the first 20 people to email us at librarylovefest@harpercollins.com. Awards Alert! Two HarperCollins Titles Named Finalists for the 2016 National Book Award in Fiction!

         9780062409201_2396a (1)  2011_nbafinalist_medal 162435

We are so proud to announce two amazing books by two of our favorite authors have been selected as finalists for the National Book Award in fiction: News of the World by Paulette Jiles and Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson.

News of the World, the #1 LibraryReads pick for October, is a sparse, heart-wrenching Western set in post-Civil War Texas that follows an aging war veteran who takes a job transporting an orphaned girl across Texas to her adoptive aunt and uncle. In a starred review, Booklist raves, “Jiles’ lyrical style and minimal punctuation allow the reader to become immersed in the dusty Texan landscape, witnessing the anguish, fear, compassion, and joy in the unlikely pair’s journey.

Another Brooklyn, the first adult novel in 20 years by the National Book Award-winning author of Brown Girl Dreaming, is a stunning, lyrical coming-of-age story centered on a group of friends as they navigate the ever-changing landscape of a perilous, beautiful, and affecting Brooklyn, New York. Another Brooklyn also received a starred review from Booklist, who says, "The novel’s richness defies its slim page count. In her poet’s prose, Woodson not only shows us backward-glancing August attempting to stave off growing up and the pains that betray youth, she also wonders how we dream of a life parallel to the one we’re living.

Please join us in congratulating Paulette and Jacqueline for this incredible accomplishment! For more information on the National Book Awards, please visit the official page here. The winners will be announced November 16th, so stay tuned! If you've read either (or both!) of these soon-to-be classics, be sure to share your thoughts.

Oh, AND it has been longlisted for the National Book Award. We have a feeling this book is just getting started and can't wait to see what else is in store. To celebrate its publication, we will send a copy to the first FIVE people to email us at librarylovefest@harpercollins.com

"My respect for Paulette Jiles grows with every novel she writes, and News of the World is her best work yet…She writes with great clarity, understanding, and a forgiving heart." —Nancy Pearl, librarian, bestselling author, literary critic

"News of the World has everything. Stupendous writing, characters that get under your skin and burrow deep into your heart, great pacing, and an ending that makes you cry with joy and relief….I feel sorry for the book I read next. News of the World is a hard act to follow." —Janet Lockhart, Wake County Public Library, Raleigh, NC

"The language is lyrical and spare and wonderfully evocative, so that by the end of the book, readers will have a hard time returning to the contemporary world. Surely one of the best books of the year." —Vicki Nesting, Assistant Director, St. Charles Parish Public Library

Jiles’ lyrical style and minimal punctuation allow the reader to become immersed in the dusty Texan landscape, witnessing the anguish, fear, compassion, and joy in the unlikely pair’s journey.” —Booklist starred review

This Western is not to be missed by Jiles’s fans and lovers of Texan historical fiction.” —Library Journal

“Jiles delivers a taut, evocative story of post-Civil War Texas in this riveting drama of a redeemed captive of the Kiowa tribe….Jiles unfolds the stories of the Captain and Johanna, past and present, with the smooth assuredness of a burnished fireside tale, demonstrating that she is a master of the western.” —Publishers Weekly

Much-Deserved Praise for LLF Favorite Peter Swanson’s HER EVERY FEAR

9780062427021_928fdI triple loved this book.
So glad to see it’s getting its due.
Peter Swanson is a magician with words, plot, nuance.
Love his work and this, in my opinion, is his best.
Egalleys on Edelweiss here.

Check out what Stephanie Chase, Director of the Hillsboro (OR) Public Library has to say:

Swanson is a master at tension, and at crafting characters the reader truly cannot get a handle on. Is this one good? Or bad? Or both? As with The Kind Worth Killing, be prepared to keep guessing, keep switching allegiances, and needing to turn the pages throughout the whole creepy story.”

It's also received starred reviews from Booklist and Library Journal:

“The skillfully conjured Boston winter creates the perfect atmosphere for breeding paranoia, which kicks into high gear with the introduction of Cherney’s Rear Window–like flashbacks. Swanson established a reputation for complex psychological thrillers with his previous novels (The Kind Worth Killing, 2015, and The Girl with a Clock for a Heart, 2014), but here he introduces a delicious monster-under-the-bed creepiness to the expected top-notch characterization and steadily mounting anxiety.” —Booklist

Psychological thriller devotees should block time to read Swanson’s (The Kind Worth Killing) novel in one sitting, preferably in the daylight. Readers can the hairs on their necks to stand straight up as they are consumed with a full-blown case of heebie-jeebies.” Library Journal

The Seattle Book Review also loved it:

“Peter Swanson’s third thriller cracks to life in the opening pages. His characters are engaging, and the reader is treated to multiple points of view in this mystery. The payoff for the reader is an excellent whodunit with a magical appeal for the mystery thriller lover.” (full review here

Buzz Alert: CLOSED CASKET is Making the Rounds!

9780062458827_94cb3This year marks the 100th anniversary of Hercule Poirot, Agatha Christie's inimitable Belgian detective. With the incredibly talented Sophie Hannah taking up the reigns and writing new mysteries featuring Poirot, Christie's vibrant legacy lives on. Ms. Hannah’s first Poirot mystery, The Monogram Murders was published to great acclaim back in 2014. The latest installment, Closed Casket, just went on sale earlier this month. See below for some of the media surrounding one of the world's all-time greatest mystery writers.

Parade.com features Closed Casket on Agatha Christie’s birthday

“Even decades after her death, Agatha Christie reigns supreme as the Queen of Crime. Today, internationally best-selling author Sophie Hannah carries on the beloved detective novelist’s work by writing all-new novels featuring Christie’s famed Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot. In Hannah’s second Poirot mystery, Closed Casket (William Morrow), Lady Athelinda Playford throws a house party with an unusual guest list that ends in murder.”

Washington Post review of Closed Casket

“The plot is carefully spun out. Clues emerge, but the case remains perplexing. At the heart of the puzzle is why Poirot and Catchpool have been invited to this dinner in the first place. Had Lady Playford anticipated — or possibly instigated — the murder? As Poirot and Catchpool suss out the evidence, Christie aficionados will delight in the familiar repartee and the intricate deduction of the solution.”

Abby Wambach’s FORWARD is the BOOKLIST ONLINE Review of the Day!

             Booklist_StarROD_badge 9780062466983_55392

In a previous post, we let you know that Abby Wambach's new memoir, Forward, is receiving huge amounts of much-deserved buzz. We can't say we're too suprised—Forward is no ordinary sports memoir. Abby lends her story hard-earned honesty and perspective as she delves into her history, from her rise as a young budding soccer star to her battle with substance abuse.

Now, Booklist has chosen it as their Booklist Online Review of the Day! In their wonderful review, Booklist states, "While the sports stories are included, this is not a book celebrating on-field triumphs: it’s a book about one woman’s journey to put her remarkable talents into context and accept herself." They finish by declaring Forward as "A cut above the standard sports memoir." To read the full review, click here. And be sure to get your copy here.

LLF Wishes Karin Slaughter’s THE KEPT WOMAN a Warm and Heartfelt Book Birthday

9780062430212_14f6fKarin Slaughter is without a doubt one of our favorites here at Library Love Fest. If you haven't yet given her a read, there's never been a better time—her latest, The Kept Woman, goes on sale today!

The Kept Woman is the latest entry in the wildly popular Will Trent series. While each book can easily be picked up and read without reading the past entries, this book in particular is a great place to start. In The Kept Woman, Will Trent finds himself on a desperate hunt for a missing (and injured) woman in the most dangerous case of his career…one that leads back to powerful past enemies. Thrilling, terrifying, and timely, The Kept Woman has starred reviews from both Library Journal AND Booklist.

Star"Slaughter excels at complications—both for her characters and in the mysteries they’re investigating. This is a page-turner, of course, but it’s also a multilayered exploration of choices and consequences and the lasting effects of damage done."Library Journal

Star"Slaughter is a permanent fixture on thrillerdom’s A-list, and a new Will Trent novel after a three-year absence will only heighten the interest." —Booklist

As if being one of the top thriller writers in existence wasn't enough, Karin is also a vocal, prominent library advocate. She just stopped by the HarperCollins office to shoot a new video message to librarians everywhere. Check it out below! The Kept Woman is on sale now, so be sure to pick up your copy here!

And for you wonderful souls who kept reading, we have a special treat. The first ten people to email us at librarylovefest@harpercollins.com will receive a SIGNED copy of The Kept Woman.

This is the best memoir I’ve read by an athlete since Andre Agassi’s Open, but it is much more than a book about sports. It’s a candid, moving account of the thrills and toils of achieving greatness—and then sustaining it.  I could not put it down, and you will not want it to end.” —Adam Grant, Wharton professor and New York Times bestselling author of Originals and Give and Take
