Hello LLF Readers! I hope those of you who celebrated Christmas had a lovely day. I went to see Les Miserables starring my husband, Hugh Jackman (it's a super secret marriage…don't be surprised if he denies it). While I don't think anything can capture the music as well as a live, stage performance, it was an enjoyable movie.
Anywho, I'm no expert at movies, so I'll stick to something I know better…books! The Son by Philipp Meyer was my holiday read, and it is epic. It follows several generations of a very wealthy, Texan family, starting with Eli McCullogh in 1849 when his family is murdered by Comanches and he is taken captive. Eli's strength and ruthlessness allows him to survive amongst the Native Americans, and grow into a hardened and determined man who builds an empire of wealth and privilege.
The other narratives are the accounts of Eli's son Peter, and great-granddaughter, JA, and are effortless woven around Eli's tale. There are very detailed, violent scenes, but The Son covers parts of history that I didn't know much about, in a seemingly genuine way, and I found myself compelled to keep reading to find out what happens to the family.
